Side Effects

DETROL LA is generally well tolerated. As with all medicines, some people who take DETROL LA may experience side effects.

The most common DETROL LA side effects include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain

Tips for managing side effects

If you have side effects from taking DETROL LA, try these simple tips.

To help manage dry mouth:

  • Chew sugar-free gum or suck on sugar-free hard candies. This can help keep your saliva flowing.
  • Take small sips of water during the day.
  • Avoid drinks with caffeine, like coffee or tea. Caffeine dries out the mouth.
  • Avoid citrus fruit juices.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Both can dry out the mouth.
  • Use a humidifier at night.

To help manage constipation:

  • Eat more fiber. Try food like apples, spinach, or whole grain breads.
  • Make sure to drink enough water.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Both can dry out your digestive system.
  • Get enough exercise. Just a 20- to 30-minute walk each day may help.
  • Never ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.
  • Use laxatives only if a doctor says you should.

If you are bothered by side effects such as dry mouth or constipation, talk to your doctor. Many medicines can cause these side effects. Or, they may be signs of other problems. Your doctor can help find the cause. And he or she may be able to help find the best plan to help you manage side effects.

DETROL® LA (tolterodine tartrate extended release capsules) treats the symptoms of overactive bladder (leaks, strong sudden urges to go, going too often).
